Yehoshua 6 - Summary

(Text) - The city of Yericho had been completely sealed. No one could go in or come out of the city. Hashem then commanded Yehoshua to have all of the nations soldiers walk around the outside of the city, one time a day, for six consecutive days. On the seventh day, in addition to the soldiers, there would be seven Kohanim blowing the shofar while walking around the city. During their last lap around the city the Kohanim would blow one “Teru’ah Gedolah” and combined with one big cry from Bnei Yisrael the wall of Yericho would come down.

That which Hashem commanded Yeshoshua was done over the first six days. On the seventh day, Yehoshua told the Jewish people that after the wall came down none of the booty from the city could be taken for his or her own benefit. All of the city’s booty had to be either destroyed or brought as a present to Hashem. If any person was to take even one piece of booty than some sort of destruction would be brought upon the Jewish people.

The nation did as Hashem commanded. They cried out loud along with the seven shofar blasts and the wall of Yericho came down. The entire city was destroyed with the exception of Rachav, Rachav’s family and Rachav’s belongings, as promised in a previous perek. The nation collected all of the gold, silver, iron, and bronze vessels in order to bring them to them as a present to Hashem. The city of Yericho was then burned and totally destroyed. Yehoshua than proclaimed that the city should be destroyed for good and anyone who would try to rebuild the city would be cursed.
