Yehoshua 7 - Summary
(Text) - The perek starts off with Achan, from Shevet Yehudah, going against the word of Hashem and taking some of the booty from what was left of the city of Yericho.
After successfully destroying Yericho, Yehoshua sent spies to check out the strength of another city, Ai. The spies returned, informing Yehoshua that a large army would not be necessary to conquer the city. So, Yehoshua sent three thousand men to go, fight and conquer the city of Ai.
Much to the surprise of Yehoshua, his army was defeated. Yehoshua responded by tearing his clothing while pleading to G-d. Yehoshua could not understand how Hashem, who had brought the nation into Israel, allow them to lose a battle and suffer many casualties.
Hashem responds, telling Yehoshua that someone in the nation had gone against his word and stole booty from Yericho and thus the entire nation had gotten punished as a result. Hashem request that the person who stole the booty from Yericho be found otherwise Bnei Yisrael would continue to suffer in many different ways.
As a result of Hashem’s request, Yehoshua through process of elimination is able to pinpoint that the person who sinned came from Shevet Yehuda. The process continued until they accused Achan of taking the booty. As a result Yehoshua forces Achan to admit to his action and when he does, Achan was stoned and his belongings were burnt in front of and by his family and all of Bnei Yisrael.
