Yehoshua 21 - Summary
(Text) - The heads of the different families among the tribe of Levi approached Elazar, Yehoshua and the tribal leaders in Shiloh to ask them for cities and fields to be given to them, in accordance to God’s command to Yehoshua. And the different tribes gave cities and fields to the Leviim.
The following cities were given to the different Levite families, according to divine lottery.
From the family of Kehat, the sons of Aharon (the Cohanim) received thirteen cities from the tribes of Yehuda, Shimon and Binyamin. The rest of the family of Kehat received 10 cities from the tribes of Efraim, Dan and half of Menashe.
From the family of Gershon, they received thirteen cities from the tribes of Asher, Naftali and half of Menashe.
From the family of Merari, they received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuven, Gad and Zevulun.
After summarizing the numbers and donors of the cities, the names of the specific cities (48 in all) given to the Leviim are listed. Among these cities are all of the cities of refuge (arei miklat) that were set aside in chapter 20.
